McCracken St House
Completed in June 2002
The project is a two storey townhouse constructed on a narrow vacant east-west site between two Victorian single fronted terrace houses. In response to the limited solar access, the living areas are located on the upper floor, claiming the only potential for north solar gain through the skylights. The ground floor potentially accommodates 3 bedrooms, although planning flexibility allows the front two rooms to double as an office and temporary guest room.
TIn addition to solar access, other environmental initiatives include the cool water courtyard providing enhanced summer ventilation, a greywater system for toilet flushing, and design for future integration of photovoltaic panels, solar hot water and rainwater tanks. Recycled materials are a key feature of the design including a recycled glass and concrete benchtop, a suspended recycled timber stair, and cast iron spiral stair opportunely discovered in the Trading Post.
