cygnet shop and dwelling
Tasmania
Completed 2011
This project is the home of Southern Swan (homeopathic laboratory, dispensary, shop); and includes a separate living quarters at the rear for owners Kate & John Reed and their son.
The existing early 20th C. building is located in the main shopping strip of Cygnet adjacent and opposite Heritage listed buildings. It required extensive alterations and additions. During the demolition work it was possible to see the previous layers of development and occupation that were recalled by the local pundits.
We kept the majority of the existing brick/timber structure at the front and rear but inserted modern levels of insulation and reconfigured the apartment at the rear to allow for northern sun and views to the paddocks at the rear. A small private courtyard at the rear gets full sun all year round.
The project will be published in February 2012 in Sanctuary 18.
